We can’t stop here. this is bat country

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008 | General | No Comments

omg a bat in the apartment!

So i came out of my room earlier today and found a bat was circling around the living room.  Confused and scared i ran back in my room and shut the door.

After yelling to Jason we decided on how to get it out.  He opened the sliding door and screen as i took some pics of it.

It flew towards me in the hallway a few times but eventually i guess it figured out the window was open and flew away.

I guess it came out of our furnace closet thingy.  Theres a hole in the ceiling where the air vent goes thru.  I had hear noises in my ceiling and wall before so now i know what there were…bats!

Hopefully we can get the apartment management to hole up the ceiling and wherever they  got in on the roof so this doesnt happen again even though it was pretty exciting lol

lots of stuff going on

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008 | Genetics, Microbiology, Work | No Comments

well its been a busy few weeks here with college starting back up.  i got kendo club and vsa to worry bout besides the usual class and work.

My research is going well.  I ended up finding out what all my dna sequences i had were.  Some suprising results though as the one bacteria we thought was one thing ended up to be something totally different.  So apparently the wrong bacteria was isolated back in Egypt.  Will have to check with the field studies where they planted lots of rice crops to determine which bacteria they actually used.  But at least we found this bacteria is beneficial to the plants.

Now i just gotta do some formal write ups of all my information and start writing my part of the paper we are going to publish.

Kimchi Chigae or something

Thursday, August 7th, 2008 | Food, Korean | No Comments

Well i made some Kimchi Chigae again.  Well its not really chigae but budae maybe.  Dunno how to spell that.  Its some sort of Korean stew that i modified a bit. Turned out pretty well i think. Its really easy to make once u got the ingredients.

Here is the recipe!

Enjoy!

Chris’ Special Kimchi Chigae

- 1 medium sized bottle of kimchi (more fermented, older kimchi is best)

- 1 pound of sausage (i used polish kielbasa lol) cut into slices

- 1/2 pound of pork belly (bacon also works)

- Some margarine or butter

-Some water

-A few spoonfuls of crushed red pepper from a Korean store

Other things can be added such as a can or packet of tuna, some green onions, tofu, mushrooms, etc.  Depends on taste.  Best to stick with just a few things though.

Heat up a large pot and melt the butter or margarine under medium high heat.  Then add kimchi till the bottom of the pan isnt visible.  Fry it until it turns a yellow color.  Add more kimchi.  Fry again.  Keep doing this until you run out of kimchi.

Add water when you are done with that.  Add more or less depending on whether you want a soup or stew.  Depends on how much kimchi was added as well.  Ok if some kimchi was burnt on the bottom as the water will deglaze it.  Let this mixture come to a boil and add the sausage and pork.  You can add anything else you want at this point.  Also add a few spoonfuls of crushed red pepper.  Taste it and see if it needs anymore.  The fresher the kimchi the more of this you will probably need.

Let this simmer for a half hour at least.  The longer the better.  After that just make some rice and enjoy!

plants plants and more plants

Thursday, August 7th, 2008 | Work | No Comments

Been really busy the last week and this harvesting the plants / getting ready to harvest them.

Turns out all the wheat ones died (about 100 test tubes). so basically that was a bunch of my time wasted caring for them.

The rice are pretty much all usable.  We have at least 3 that survived of each treatment so we will have a good average of all the measurements we are doing.  So far we have took pictures of them, scanned the leaves, scanned the roots, cutting the plant at the stem base to do those two things, taking some samples of the bacteria we inoculated them with, took samples of pieces of the roots, and a few other things i cant remember cause ive worked so much and am very tired.

Will post some more info when this week is done.  Ill try and snag some pictures of what im doing as well.  See ya!

busy week

Sunday, July 27th, 2008 | Car, General, Work | No Comments

well this past week the boss headed out for the netherlands for some sort of meeting with people over there we will be colaborating with.  also the visiting egyptian professor left so there was a lot going on this week.  experiment is still running also though im the only one working on it.  i did find out i will be a co-author on the paper yanni (the egyptian guy) is writing so im very happy.  With me being a colaborator on Franks papers and co-author on Yannis im gonna have some sweet stuff for a resume.

Wednesday i went home since i havent done so in a while and also so i could work on my new car.  My dad sold my old car for almost what i bought it for a few years ago.  Quite amazing how much gas efficient cars are going for!  So basically this new car is gonna cost me about $1500 bucks - pretty good for a 2005 :)

Thanks Dad for your hard work!

My korean friend Young owned the car previously and drove thru yellow line paint in it.  So i spent pretty much the last 3 days at home trying to get it off.  I got most the visible stuff off and spray painted the wheel wells and mud guards black.  It looks brand new [again].  Maybe post pics later.

Otherwise everyone is gone in lab this week again and i will be busy moving stuff to half the lab.  We are definitely having a faculty member move in to share the lab with us :(

Purified the DNA Finally!

Saturday, July 12th, 2008 | Work | No Comments

Well Friday i finally had the chance to work with Gabe next door and purify the DNA from samples i had made.  It went pretty well.  I did most the work and he just gave me some tips.  It was a new process for him anyways so i also had to get tips from some other people from labs on the floor.  Was also interesting to use their lab and setup.  A little different than i was used to.  Cool to work in a lab just with students like me though; definitely not used to that.  They had an ipod playing on their radio when i walked in so i knew it was different.

Glad to have met some new people doing what i do in lab which gave a better perspective on what they do.  Appears they are not too different from me.  A little of work under the hood or lab bench and most the time on a computer analyzing the data just like me.

Also funny that they all ended up leaving me alone in their lab which i wasnt used to at all.  Also had to close some stuff down for them and lock up LOL!

After that i ended up leaving to get some food cause it was late then i had to go back to work to water all the plants again! Forgot to take pictures of all this…ill do it later so i have some documentation of my work.

Took me a few hours to water them so i ended up leaving at like midnight on Friday night.  Luckily its the summer or else id have gone nuts.  Im pretty sure i was the last person left in the whole building.

But im glad to help out at work in any way i can.  Rather be challenging my self intellectually and getting some practical work experience than wasting my time on games or drinking anyways!

busy day at work today

Thursday, July 10th, 2008 | General, Work | No Comments

Today was a real pain.  Was supposed to isolate and purify some DNA then run pcr with it but as usual lots of other stuff kept coming up.  So i ended up getting the 26 samples ready i needed by about 5 pm when i was about ready to leave.  I’ll be working on that part of the experiment with a dude from the lab next door and he had to leave as well.  So basically gonna be another day till we start.  I think he is gone after this week also so who the hell knows who ill be working with next.  Nvr done pcr and 16s stuff before though so this is all new to me.  No pictures of the experiment yet but will try.  Maybe get one of me under the hood wearing a lab coat and gloves looking all professional.

also my kitty appears to have a cold apparently…awww.  well hes also got cancer so i guess thats the least of his worries

sup peeps im back

Well the site has said for months (years?!) that i got the domain back after losing it to some japanese company…But i finally decided to use it!

Was meaning to come back earlier but just didnt get it started.  Been really busy making  other sites and i rather concentrate on those than my own website even if i am paying for this domain :)

So was talking with a friend and she convinced me to start my site back up and i wasnt too busy so installed wordpress once again and here i am!

I figure ill blog about life in general and hopefully include pictures.  Foods i cook, projects im doing in lab, games im playing (eve!) and whatever else.

Should be fun!
